Equity crowdfunding, what is that?
Equity crowdfunding is very similar to the crowdfunding that you already know (KickStarter, IndieGogo, Haricot, etc). But the huge difference is that you are not going to receive a reward or a gadget. In an equity crowdfunding, you get stocks in the company that you decide to support.
In May 2015, the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) changed the rules so that anybody can become an investor under certain circumstances. In the past, you needed to be an accredited investor, meaning you’re either worth 1M$ or earn more than 200 000$ yearly. Under this new regime, anybody can support local start-ups and share with them both the benefits and the risks.
This short video will help you get a better grasp on the topic. Note, however that while this video does a good job defining the concept in plain english, it is still limited to accredited investor. In our case, it will be opened to the public! If you’ve always dreamed of being involved in the start-up world, this might be your chance!
